Inertial confinement fusion
The achievment of the energy breakeven in NIF on Dec 5th, 2022 has strongly revived the interest for this technological approach towards fusion energy. Public and private
companies have entered the international stages with promising designs.
From all these initiatives we remark the laser-driven wet-wall reactor proposal from Xcimer Energy Corporation. Its novel high-energy laser design will provide a powerful drive to achieve high yield implosions of large targets, with the following benefits:
- Low repetition rate with better chamber clearing.
- Reduced instabilities during the implosion.
Xcimer Energy Corporation has been granted support from DOE and already raised over $100M from private investors. In June 2026, DOE approved the preconceptual design of the Athena fusion pilot plant, paving the way for further developments and new investment.
